How to write like a god

Begin to see yourself as a great and awesome writer or content creator already.  If you can imagine it, you’re one step ahead of the rest who’re trying to get into this game.  So you want to write like a god? Well, this essay will give you both the inspiration and motivation to get you pumped.

I’m not writing a tutorial for acquiring a definitive writing skill-set.  You’ll find plenty of good and fair help out there.  I’m showing you an enlightened way to literary sage-hood.  You can write awesome stuff.  I used the same 9 steps as a teen to become an award winning lyricist.  I wrote a few poems that also struck a nerve with my readers.  I’ll introduce you to my informal and infamous self taught approach to putting words together.

1) Sleep with Your Pen & Pad or Note Taker

If you want to become a kick-ass writer you’d need to build the skill-set.  That’s what most gurus might say.  But what does that mean exactly? And what has this got to do with catching winks with your pen and your pad under your pillow?

To start writing like a god you need to first switch to god-mode.  Visit this gift that God gave you.  Pay attention to the internal talent before you take on writing styles and strategies that are in demand in the world today.

The purpose for being in bed with your note taker or pen & pad is to do the obvious.  You’re building a very intimate relationship with your writing instrument.  It’s going to serve you well for the balance of your writing vocation.

Ideas come at anytime.  You’re better off catching them when you wake up in the middle of the night.  Be deliberate also in documenting your dreams for what they’re worth.  I personally sleep with a pen and a pad next to me.  It should be easy to reach and use for scribbling great ideas down.  I tried taking notes with my phone but as soon as the screen lit up, it interrupted the rest of my sleep.  Use the method that works for you best.

2) Don’t Go to the Bathroom Without Them

The habit of using the bathroom with your note taker is indispensable.  That little room has proved to be a powerful place for generating ideas for lots of creative writers.  Till this day, I always take my writing instruments along.  Both digital and traditional writing tools are recommended.  This certainly means you’ll be spending a lot of quality time in there.

But I’ll suggest keeping the writing activity there to a minimum.  If you have to write, stick to a 15 minute time limit.  Or just do mind-storming instead.  List out 10 (or 20) ideas in a pad.  Make them answer a question you set at the top of your pad.

According to James Altucher, this is a workout for your idea muscle.  The exercise should be practiced habitually every day.  This will help you come up with ideas a lot quicker and defeat the dreaded disease called Writer’s Block.

3) Don’t Leave Home Without Them

If you want to write like a god you better not forget your note taker.  Of course you have it on you now.  Your smart-ass phone.  Your phone could be a great tool for taking notes and harvesting ideas.  It is the electronic version of what I used in the 1990s.

There’s only one problem.  Although the mobile phone presents itself as an effective note taker, it is fraught with so many distractions.  Because it does many other things.  You’re often caught checking notifications, scrolling through social media or playing a quick game.

I know what you’re thinking.  You can overcome the distractions? Not a chance!  The reason why other cool apps would always win in the fight for attention – it’s because writing can be super boring sometimes.  Stop teasing your brain with this mess.  Use a real pen and pad if you want to write like a god.  The digital note taking thing works only for a handful of folks.  But on the other hand, go ahead and prove me wrong.

The pen and paper is an organic medium that has existed for thousands of years.  Therefore it would have a spiritual impact on your writing and output for a long time to come.  I’m serious.

4) Think About Your Notes and Review Frequently

That’s sounds kinda odd.  Why would anyone want to mix work and play? Or perhaps the other way around.  This depends if writing is how you make a living – or a hobby.  I used to write in the night clubs when my friends were busy trying to score.  I had to pour out some ideas before getting back to having fun.

Nowadays, you could do this by taking voice notes as needed.  If you’re serious about doing this as a challenge, record yourself talking in the bathroom and other places.  Review the data and transcribe it.  Talk about random ideas (for starters) and transcribe it into words with an app.  Upon formatting and editing this stuff, you’ll be blown away by the power that this generates.

If you’re an online content builder, chances are that your competitors are not doing this.  Writing will become a second nature to you.  You will morph slowly into a demi-god.  Did you know that I used to dream in words?  It was a crazy matrix experience where characters from certain words I couldn’t even identity; would be scrolling back and forth in front of me.  I know I’d struck a psychological nerve of some sort.

5) Start Writing as Soon as You Wake Everyday

The reason why you’re gonna write better than others is because you’re different.  As soon as you start doing the things your competitor isn’t doing (or willing to do), you’ve won.  If you plan on becoming a full-time writer or content creator online, then the game is certainly rigged – in your favor.

Start your day by writing something down.  I don’t care if it’s “Good morning, me!“.  Just write it down.  I find the use of a pen and pad very effective.  You can still do this on your device with a note app.  You can dictate this via voice also.  But set this challenge up and do it for 90 days straight.

Build a strategy and a thorough plan if you must.  Obviously, your first 4 days would be experimental.  But then have a topical strategy.  For example, if you’re a blogger, you could set a timer to write for 5 to 15 minutes on a pad or your phone as soon as your feet hits the ground.  You have to do this before you touch your toothbrush or talk to anyone.

You’re operating in god-mode now.  You’re bringing into the conscious world then mysteries that were hidden in the subconscious mind and dream realms.  This essential challenge is for 5 to 15 (or 30 minutes) only.  After using the bathroom, eat some breakfast then write your heart out on your laptop.  You could then do the 3 hour writing quota that you planned for the day to build your personal brand.

6) Write Phone Call Scripts Before Making Important Calls

Phone call scripts you say?  Yes, I know what you’re thinking.  If you’re thinking these are the 9 stupid steps to learn how to write like a god – think again.  They are just 9 suggestions and challenges you can undertake.  Consider this exercise a research of great importance to your career.

I’ve been writing phone call scripts since I was just a teen.  Because I have to get my thoughts in one place.  Especially when I have important things to say to someone on the other end.  This is not just a communication aid it is a million dollar strategy.  How do you think telemarketers make millions for businesses.  They invest a lot in creating these scripts and test them with a well trained team.

Your challenge is to start doing this and see the difference it makes.  The other person on the other side would think you’re so articulate.  They’ll love talking to you because you’re so ease flowing.

At 16, here’s what I did:  I would write just 3 basic points or topics I could talk about. Then I also wrote down vital reminders.

This challenge will shape the tone of your voice.  Get feedback.  I personally used this strategy to call a lot of teen girls my age at that time.  The results were outstanding.  I could build up the conversation to the point that I knew what they were going to say next.  I asked for dates, and I prepared a backup response if they ever said NO.  LoL.  I won.

If you’re job hunting, try building up a script you’d use during the interview.  I want you to anticipate all they’re going to ask you, then answer with great confidence.  I had massive success finding jobs with this back in the day.  I still got the job even when I didn’t have the exact qualification they were looking for.

Furthermore, I negotiated better salaries than my co-workers.  I got paid more and got promoted quicker.  But how? You might ask?  Find a clever way to compensate for your weaknesses by tactically exaggerating your strengths.

7) Write in the Dark If Awake in the Middle of the Night

I know this may sound insane.  It was perfectly normal when I did it many years ago.  I wrote in the dark when I woke up in the middle of the night.  Since I had my pen and pad close by, why not scribble something down.  I couldn’t be bothered to hit the light switch.  I guess it’s different today because you might have a lamp, a torch or your phone light.

Back in the day, I had to write several words down each night.  I feared I’d forget it by the morning.  And I didn’t use a dictation device either.   So I woke up in the morning and saw what I’d written.  They were slanted and bent all over the paper.  LOL… what did I expect?

Furthermore, you don’t have to go low tech.  Just do you!  Stick to what works for you.  This suggestion is just a challenge you could do.  See how it impacts your writing ability.  What you write in the dark, will one day bring you to the limelight.  The whole world is waiting to see how gifted you are.

8) Ask for a Pen When a Gift is Promised

Your pen is your nearest kin.  Your baby.  For most of my life, I’ve treated pens with a lot of respect.  I don’t want careless people handling my pen and losing it.  And they would reply, “well, it’s only a pen”, like seriously?

Ask for a pen if a gift is ever promised.  If you have to choose your own birthday gift, let it be a gold pen.  This will change the way output falls upon your paper.  It will show in your work like magic.  Other people will notice how you glow when you have this instrument between your fingers.

Your creative ability to write is a gift in itself.  You and your pen are live Robinhood and his bow.  Just like Zoro and his sword.  Treat this tool well, and it will serve you like your personal servant.

9) Read the Bible, then Other Books

Why the bible among all books? I’m recommending the bible as the foundation for your reading.  Let it become the lens from which you read other material – or even consume digital and traditional media.

The bible contains the mind of God.  It is termed as a religious book but it is actually a manual of life.  The bible contains truth from Genesis to Revelation.  All its contents are factual.  It contains a lot of historical records also as wells as spiritual insights that can only be unfolded through faith.

Why again is this book vital for you? It’s because it contains organic strategies and hidden wisdom.  It’s not like other books out there that contain second-hand strategies.

Use it as a lens to to read other books.  You’ll be able to choose better reading materials.  It will give you sound insights into understanding every business, finance, or investing book out there.  You will grow wiser and deeper into your own field and niche with this exercise.

10) BONUS: The Pen is your Friend, My Friend

At this point the pen is your best friend.  You need a good one at that.  You must recognize that this is not just a writing instrument. It is Picasso’s paint brush.  Your pen lives between the fingers of a maestro!  Let your pen serve you well.

I had some funny moments with my pen.  I got emotionally attached to all of them.  I hardly threw them out when they were out of ink.  I kept them and honored them for the great work they’ve achieved in the past.

Did you know that I hate lending my pen out?  What were these people thinking – asking to borrow my pen?  Half of them never returned it.  I was furious.  Of course they’ll never understand.  They probably think I am mad for making a fuss about a little pen.  So I kept a decoy.  In public, I have an extra (not special) pen others could borrow.

Have respect for the paper and pad also.  I have journals and notes that are more than 20 years old.  My kids and grand-kids will inherit a portion of them for their personal inspirational journey.  My works are precious to me.  I wouldn’t trade my notes for anything in the world.  But I’m willing to sell their derivatives for a small fee – in the form of books, and publications and their digital equivalents.

A Few Parting Words

If you want to be a bad-ass writer, learn from those who’ve walked the path.  If anyone anywhere would give you a handful of writing tips for your journey as a writer or content creator – take it.  The nine (9) nuggets and the bonus tenth you’ve seen above had been my strategy.

Although I didn’t have a clue about what the heck I was doing, I accidentally stumbled upon these writing habits.  I’ve been a natural-born pen wielder and I didn’t even know it.  I’ve started a few businesses and projects that didn’t see the light of day.  But upon doing something that related to writing – it changed by life.  I promise you – your life is about to change if you simply give my recommendations a try.

See you at the very top my friend.  Please share anything on this strange list of 9 commandments of writing for beginners – in the comments below.  Thanks for reading.

Guess what? I write phone call scripts too. Since young! 😄 When I was running my business, I had a script for every enquiry and it worked like a charm. I always say it’s about making the effort to sound effortless. 😉
